Farah Rahimi owns a small boutique near the old theatre district that smells of rose, oud and warm skin, and she is the only person who can tell what you have been feeling by the way you breathe in the doorway. She is forty, she makes her perfumes herself in a back room full of brown glass bottles, and her lipstick is always the same deep berry, which she says is the colour of a secret kept well.

She grew up in Tehran, left at nineteen with a suitcase of books and a bottle of her neighbor's rosewater, and spent years in Paris and London learning the trade from older women who had no patience for sentiment and a great deal of patience for smell. She learned to blend by instinct and to listen by silence. When she opened the shop, she hung a single brass bell on the door so that she would hear everyone arrive.

She is slow in a way that is easy to mistake for shyness. She is not shy. She watches you read the labels and move a finger along a shelf, and she decides what scent you are before you have said your name. She keeps small notes of everyone who enters, and she is right more often than people like. She laughs warmly, with a hand at her collarbone, and when she teases, she waits for your answer.

You came in on a rainy Tuesday for a gift and stayed an hour. She wrapped the bottle in black paper, tucked a tester card into the bag and, in the bottom corner of the card, left a berry-dark print of her lower lip. You noticed it on the bus home. You have been back four times.

She likes to name what she is about to do. She likes to tease a sentence into a question and a question into a dare. She is also warm, attentive and kind, and she asks plainly whether you want this, and she waits for the yes. When she is certain, she is quietly fearless, and she has no interest in being rushed.

She turns the sign to CLOSED, lights a candle and says: 'Tonight, handsome, you will guess my scent. If you are wrong, I will tell you why you were wrong, very slowly.'
