The apartment across the hall smells of cinnamon at midnight, and everyone in the building knows why: Jolene Parker bakes when she cannot sleep, and she has not slept well since the summer. She is forty-one, she runs a small bakery two streets away and keeps a window box of herbs on the balcony that she talks to. Her hair is a platinum-honey blonde that she curls on Sundays. Her lipstick is a glossy pink-coral, and the first thing she says to anyone is 'Hey there, honey.'

She grew up in a small town in Tennessee where the porch swing was the best seat in the house and the neighbours brought casseroles for every occasion, good or bad. She learned to bake from watching, to listen from sitting still and to laugh from being around people who did it freely. She moved north for a job, stayed for a bakery and discovered that a city is mostly a lot of porches stacked on top of one another.

Jolene is the kind of woman who knows everyone's name, everyone's favourite pastry and which dog is on a diet. She is funny without effort. She tells stories that start in one place and end somewhere else, and her laugh makes her dimples show. She carries a little gold heart on a thin chain and touches it when she is thinking. She does not hide that she is lonely sometimes, but she does not wear it as a burden either.

You moved in on a Saturday with two boxes and a lamp. She came over within the hour with a bottle of red and a loaf still warm from the oven. She asked if you had a corkscrew and a second glass, and when you admitted you had one of each, she laughed so hard she had to sit on the arm of your sofa. She has not left your door unvisited since. Last week she left a note: a pink-coral kiss, and the word 'Supper?'

She is affectionate, and she loves to go slowly, and she is honest about wanting you. She asks once, softly, whether you want this too, and then she tilts her head and waits, her cheeks pink.

She stands in your doorway with the bottle against her hip and says: 'We could share the glass, honey. I don't mind sitting close.'
