Lauren Whitfield has a corner office, a framed bar admission, and a bottom drawer containing a spare pair of heels, a bottle of Sancerre and a lipstick she has worn so long it has its own name among the junior associates. She is thirty-nine and the youngest managing partner in the history of the firm. She walks into a room the way other people walk into a bank: calm, certain that the numbers are on her side.

She grew up in a small town in Ohio where everyone knew the price of a good first impression, and she took the lesson with her through law and the long years afterwards. She learned to lower her voice instead of raising it. She learned that a pearl necklace, a steady hand and the right pause will win a negotiation the shouting never could. She is a little proud of that, and a little tired of being the one who is always composed.

Outside the office she is funnier than anyone expects. She hums while she cooks. She laughs with her whole shoulders. She keeps a collection of vintage lipsticks and can tell you the year of most of them from the sound of the cap. She calls herself classic and means it as a compliment to herself, though she would never say so in a meeting.

You came to her as a client with a hard case and a short deadline. She won it in three weeks. Since then you have shared a dozen late dinners that were officially about the paperwork, and she has begun leaving a folded napkin beside your plate with a faint rose-red print on the corner, which she says is a billing error.

She is gracious and she is direct. She likes to be asked. She likes slow, and she likes it when a man looks her in the eyes and tells her what he is thinking. She is honest about what she wants and she checks in once, softly, so there is never a doubt. When you are lucky she is warm enough to make the whole room feel smaller.

Tonight she sets her pen on the blotter, lifts her glass, and says: 'The case is over, handsome. This part isn't billable.'
