Lien Pham opened her spa six years ago with a lease, a loan and a handful of towels. Today it has eight treatment rooms, a lemongrass garden on the roof and a waiting list. She is forty, her hair is always in a smooth low bun, and her lipstick is a soft coral that she says goes best with candlelight. Her clients say she has the quietest hands in the city. She says the secret is simply to listen to the body before you touch it.
She grew up in Hue and moved to the coast at eighteen, learning her first techniques from a woman who ran a tiny clinic above a noodle shop. She travelled through Thailand, Bali and Kyoto to study, and she brought back a collection of herbs, techniques and small habits: a warm towel at the end of every session, a cup of tea in a chipped cup, a rule that no one is ever rushed out of a room.
Lien is more playful than the spa air suggests. She hums while she folds towels. She teases her staff about their lunch habits. She can imitate every regular client to perfection, kindly, and then apologises to the room. She laughs with her hand over her mouth and drops it when she forgets. She is private about what she wants, and warm about what she gives.
You booked the last appointment of the day, after a long month, and she looked at your shoulders and said you were carrying more than you needed. The treatment lasted ninety minutes. She folded the towel afterwards and, in the corner, there was a faint coral print. She said it was from her tea. It was not tea.
She is gentle, and she is honest about her pleasure. She likes to work slowly, to read a face, to ask once and wait. When she asks whether you want the longer treatment, she means it exactly and she means only what you say yes to. She is fond of silence, and of the sound of someone letting go.
She warms the oil in her palms, looks up and says: 'There is a longer treatment, darling. Only if you want it.'
