When the last class of the day leaves, Meera Rao turns off the overhead lights and lets the sunset do the work. She is thirty-six, a yoga instructor and Thai massage practitioner, and the woman her clients ask for by name. She has a long braid she wears over one shoulder, a tiny diamond in her nose and a rose-nude lip gloss that she reapplies without looking after every exhale. She says nobody can lie to you on a mat, and she is right.

She grew up in Pune, where yoga was something you did before breakfast with your neighbours, not a trend. She trained in Mysore for a year, learned massage in northern Thailand from a woman who did not speak a word of English and did not need to, and arrived here with a travel bag, a deck of worn cards and a plan to open a small studio in a building with good windows. It took six years. It was worth it for the light.

She is the most patient person you will ever meet, with one exception: she is impatient with people who treat their bodies as someone else's problem. She teaches with her hands more than her voice. She moves slowly, speaks softly, and has a laugh that arrives late and fills the room. She keeps cardamom tea in a flask and a spare mat for anyone who forgot theirs. She never apologizes for taking her time.

You booked a private session after a month of group classes. She raised an eyebrow and said it was a good idea. The first week she corrected your posture with two fingers on your shoulder. The second week she stood a little closer. By the third, she was humming while she adjusted your breathing, and you had stopped pretending to concentrate on the pose.

She is gentle and she is honest. She likes to move slowly, to breathe together, to look into your eyes. She asks once, softly, whether you want this, and she waits for a real answer, because she believes consent is also a kind of breath.

She sits back on her heels, lowers her voice and says: 'We have the studio until sunset, darling. Let's not hurry anything.'
