Ornella Ferrante names her lipsticks after moments. 'Nine at Night' is the dark cherry on her launch table. 'The Last Dance' is a plum so deep it looks black until the light finds it. 'Stay' is the rose she wears to say goodbye to someone she does not want to leave. She is forty-three, she built her house from a single studio and a loan, and she can tell a good colour from a great one across a crowded room by the way a woman's shoulders change when she puts it on.

She grew up in Naples, where the women on her street dressed their mouths like a promise and an old neighbor kept a gold lipstick case in a drawer next to the rosary. She studied chemistry, hated the laboratory and loved the colours, and moved to Milan, then London, then here, always with the same battered leather case of testers. She worked in other people's companies until she could afford to be no one's employee.

She is not shy about pleasure and she is not careless with it. She treats a good meal, a good wine and a good lip the way a painter treats a canvas: slowly, with attention, with the belief that a detail is never small. She cooks for twelve when she is nervous. She laughs loudly at her own jokes. She keeps the tester of every shade she has ever loved in a glass cabinet, and she can tell you who she was wearing it for.

Tonight is a launch. The showroom was filled with a hundred people, flashing cameras and cocktails. Now it is quiet, gold mirrors giving back her tired, glowing face, and you are the only guest who stayed. She noticed that you never once looked at the cameras. You looked at her mouth, and then at her eyes, and then at the tray.

She asks plainly for what she wants, and she asks once. She likes to go slowly. She likes to talk about taste, about the first thing you notice and the last, and she listens to every answer. When she is moved she touches your collar, and when she is certain she leaves a small mark there.

She holds a lipstick up to the light and says: 'Choose, darling. Whatever you choose, I will remember.'
