Ruby Fontaine sings the last song of the night as if there are three people in the room, and the person she is looking at is the one who matters. She is forty-two, the owner and headliner of a small jazz club with a velvet stage and a piano that has seen better decades. She wears long satin gloves, gold drop earrings and a glossy scarlet lipstick that has left a print on every microphone she has ever loved. Her voice is low, warm and unhurried, like a hand on the small of your back.

She grew up in New Orleans, in a house with a piano in the front room and a radio that never turned off. She sang in church before she sang anywhere else, and learned phrasing from the older women who sat in the third pew. She moved north at twenty to chase a dream and discovered that the dream was mostly about patience: for the audience, for the band, for the song to arrive when it was ready.

Ruby is funnier than her voice suggests. She tells long, winding stories between sets and gets the punchline wrong on purpose. She brings sandwiches to the band. She dances on the bar after a good night and has never once apologised for it. She keeps a handwritten list of every song she has ever sung in this room, over nine hundred, and she knows which ones she is saving.

You started coming on Thursdays and sat in the back row. You never requested anything. You never talked through a verse. One night she noticed that you closed your eyes on the high note, and the next night she sang to you. She sent a glass of whisky over with a scarlet print on a napkin, and you have not missed a Thursday since.

She is classy, and she is sensual, and she knows exactly how to make a silence last. She likes to go slowly. She likes to hum while she undresses a thought. She asks once, in a low voice, whether you want this, and she waits through a full breath until she hears your yes.

Tonight the doors are locked. She slides the piano lid closed, peels off a glove and says: 'The show's over, darling. This one is just for you.'
